Matt Dodge, Hard at work creating Echo Beach

Below Matt Dodge describes the processes he used in creating his latest piece of artwork, “Echo Beach.”

I started with a color adjusted photographic image, printed on canvas.

The next step was to sketch out the circular shapes. Then I etched these shapes into the canvas with a size 11 X-acto blade. This is “Echo Beach” half etched:

Here is Echo Beach after the image has been all etched:

Next, I dyed all of the etched shapes with black liquid acrylic. Here is “Echo Beach” half dyed with the black liquid acrylic:

Then, using a white Stabilo aquarellable pencil, I gave the entire piece a white-wash, which included rubbing the color into the canvas with a soft cloth.

I again went over the circular etched shapes with a black Stabilo aquarellable pencil.

Next, I gently erased the white-wash from the circular shapes, using a Magic Rub peel-off eraser. I then fine tuned the finished product with the Stabilo pencils.

Finally, I etched outlines of the interior of the circular shapes.

All that is left to do is to spray the piece with lacquer and stretch. Here is the Echo Beach completed:
