Douglas E. Taylor’s comments about his exhibit, Whirled Piece: “This exhibit is a continuous series, mostly inspired by the motif of aspen and cottonwood leaves. Like all of my previous series, I use symbols of nature as metaphors for the human condition. Hopefully, they are ope n to interpretation, like the writing that accompanies each piece. For the last three years all of my imagery has had creative writing or poetry accompanying each image. The writing is not intended to illustrate the imagery, or vise-a-versa. They are separate entities but fitting companions.
The imagery relate to nature and the natural laws that we humans seem to want to bend and break. In my mind, the bird imagery relate a lot to the leaf pieces. Perhaps birds are symbols for those natural laws broken. For a long time humans have been attaching great spirit and power to the idea of a bird and the bird's connection to the earthly and heavenly plain. On separate occasions, I have experienced the amazing physical presence of the eagle. I have even been visited by an eagle on a starry night. I have heard one move the air around it, as it flew over my head. I have witnessed their place in the cycle of life. It must feel the same now as it did many thousands of years ago, when our early ancestors watched in wonder, attaching th emselves spiritually to these great birds.”
Whirled Piece: “Whatever is happening in the world, it is a reflection of who we are as human beings. Our choices are constantly bending and breaking the old laws, evolving, and getting closer to our true selves and our truest potential. Sometimes it is hard to see things as they really are when we are whirled, and think we are different than the other pieces being twirled.”

Taylor’s mixed-media art is created on canvas with many layers of collage, made from fragments of many types and processes of printmaking and Oriental rice papers, combined with many layers and glazes of acrylic painting, including the use of iridescent and iridescent interference colors that shift and change with various lighting qualities. Seeing an original is a special experience.
