Sten Hoiland 3 - D Wire Sculpture
Initially drawn to wire sculpture through the early figures of Alexander Calder, Sten Hoiland began to play with these forms and materials. “There is a constant challenge in working three dimensionally with wire. Because it’s still basically a line drawing, the figures are stuck somewhere between two and three dimensions. I am constantly trying to suggest as many good vantage points as possible while maintaining a simplicity to keep the energy light. The changing shadows cast by the movement of the figures add additional dimensions to the sculptures.”
Hoiland loves the portability of wire. His “studio” is like a knitting basket, allowing him to bring it with him almost anywhere. He has worked in ceramics and photography which both require a great deal of equipment, and involve a long drwan out porches, and expensive materials. With wire he has none of these encumbrances. He enjoys constantly working out new ideas and always welcomes special commissions.
Sten Hoiland’s material of choice is rebar tie wire (#16 gauge), though he has done projects in copper and colored aluminum wire.
Sten Hoiland graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in Resource Studies, and later taking a variety of art courses at Chico State University and Butte College. In 1999, he received the Deans Award from the College of Humanities and Fine Arts at CSU, Chico. Hoiland applies his diverse education and career experiences to his whimsical narratives seen in many of his images
He lives in Chico, California with his wife Kathleen, daughter Kea, two demanding cats, a very needy dog, a sweet horse and a naughty pony.
