Axis is a balanced line between forces or matter. Axis is to pivot, an arbor, a spindle, a shaft.  Axis is also defined as the crux, basis, essence of something. In this image I intend the title, Axis, to suggest the delicate but always pervasive balance between the natural laws of nature.  Here the crane balances on his spindly legs in a graceful and stable way. The crane, a great bird of air, water and earth, acts as a connection between it's three different worlds. Perhaps it is a spirit like the ancient people believed. A spirit that could ascend from this earthly plain to the sky, to heaven and descend at will to tell us stories. The firmament sits on the horizon as easy as our eyes find that seemingly flat line.  The great birds know how round the Earth is and how deep the sky is.

There is silent poetry between the fish and the birds. The same music quietly played at the shift of the seasons. These hushed sounds tint the colors of the leaves and shade the feel of the wind. There is an axis, a twilight, a crest between the seasons.

The Original Media:  mixed media:  collage of mixed process printmaking and acrylic and iridescent acrylic painting (see detailed descriptions of printmaking processes enclosed). Axis utilizes collagraphs, etchings, linoleum relief prints, monotypes, dry points and photocopy transfer.

The Original Art By Douglas E.Taylor

Lake of the Sky Tango : Lake Tahoe is also known as "Lake of the Sky".  It is just over 6200 feet above sea level and sets like a jewel between the Sierra Nevada range and the Carson Mountain range.  The lake's clear water reflects the spectrum of blues and other colors created in the mostly clear sky.

This image was part of a series inspired by the slow dance that the pine trees do. As the trees mature and age and ever so slowly stop growing and slowly start there way toward demise, they perform a dance. The trees slowly bend and curl their arms, their branches.  Some even resemble ornamental iron and twist in amazing shapes. They tango with the wind and weather for many years, standing still and dancing before the lake. They do the Lake of the Sky Tango.

Original Media:  mixed media:  collage of mixed process printmaking and acrylic and iridescent acrylic painting.  Lake of the Sky Tango utilized printmaking processes such as collagraphs, linoleum relief prints, monotypes, and dry points.

Tahoe Area Satellite Map, enhanced with a digital sonar scanning revealing the actual landscape under the lake water. The roads have also been enhance for better readability and locations labeled. The Tahoe Rim Trail is also indicated.  At the bottom of the map is an side elevation of the TahoeBasin and mountains. It reveals the story that the lake level used to be 700 feet higher than it is today and what happened to create that level and why it is at the level it is today,  facinating story!

It is printed on heavy low luster paper and is 36 x 24 inches. This graphically colorful and beautiful map is a must and sells for $25 unframed.

This contemporary map is made from enhanced satellite imagery and a digital sonar scanning revealing the actual landscape under the lake water.
This makes a wonderful contrast to the old antique
1876
Lake Tahoe
Map and reveals how amazingly accurate the vintage map is.  The lake is so big that even after climbing the highest peaks around the lake you can not tell the shape and contour of the shoreline and lake. That can only be seen from space, miles high.  The Wheeler survey crew would have to be extremely proud of their accomplishment and skills.
