This is the vista from our windows: Agatam Beach, Mt. Tallac and the southwest shore of Lake Tahoe.  The character of the lake changes everyday, and every season.

Lake Tahoe is 12 miles wide and nearly 22 miles long.

It has a little more than seventy miles of shore line.snow on the east shore of Lake Tahoe

The surface area is 193 square miles with a volume of 39 trillion gallons.  That is enough to cover the state of California with water, one foot deep!

1,645 feet is it’s greatest depth with an overall average depth of 1000 feet.

It is the third deepest lake in North America.

The normal high water level is 6,229.1 feet above sea level.

The surface temperature averages 50 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter and 68 degrees in the summer.

41 - 68 degrees Fahrenheit
               5 - 20 degrees Celcius

Lake Tahoe is split between California and Nevada. Seven counties touch it’s shore.

It is beautiful and known for it’s clarity.  Unfortunately it loses water clarity every year, a foot and one-half on average.  There are many environmental controls to protect the integrity of the lake.

The only outlet for the water is the Truckee River.  The river does not flow to the ocean but is the imbecile to Pyramid Lake, north of Reno, Nevada.  Pyramid Lake is surrounded by desert and is slightly smaller than Lake Tahoe and not nearly as deep.

The gallery features contemporary satellite poster maps of the Lake Tahoe area as well as the antique 1876 Map image.

A winter sunset as seen from the beach across the highway from Vista Gallery. Snow covers the sandy beach. We often get double sunsets and sunrises, especially in the winter.
Often thick lenticularis clouds form north and
south of the lake. The light bounces
off of the atmosphere sometimes creating an even more spectacular light and color show in the opposite direction of the sun light source. Such is the
case with
Wyatt Ogilvy’s Emerald Bay
image in the left hand column
.  Ogilvy’s image is a sunset image looking toward the sunrise direction.

There is research being done on the probability that Mark Twain’s timber claim camp described in “Roughing It” was at what is now Tahoe Vista. Twain and his partner accidentally burned their timber claim with a runaway campfire.
Could it be the location of Vista Gallery?
