These sculptures have a surprising physical presence. They are truly three-dimensional, taking up space and casting shadows which contribute to their special substantial feeling. The web site photographs do not capture the sculptural dimension. These photographs of the art resemble two-dimensional line drawings, not three-dimensional sculptures they are. Viewers discover that every angle of seeing these artworks reveal very articulate gestures and details. It is just as important what Hoiland chooses to leave out of his images as it is what he selects to include. He is a master of the essential
