Even though we may live in Lake Tahoe, one of the most spectacular places on earth, everyone needs to get away for a while. Fortunately for all of us, the Tioga Pass region of Mono County and the Eastern Sierra playground is only three hours away. The combination of high desert, mountain lakes, and Yosemite National Park, not to mention the Tioga Gas Mart, is too much for Melissa and I to pass up.

So we drove down from Lake Tahoe last weekend to spend one last time down there before my deployment to the Middle East with the Navy. While we did do several hikes, (much to her parents chagrin, I guess at 66 they don’t like to run around as much as we do!) the highlight of our trip was the drive back to Mammoth Lakes from the Tioga Gas Mart.

We had just eaten some divine Seared Ahi (yes, they serve this at the gas station!) and were cruising along Hwy 395 hoping maybe there would be some great light over Mono Lake. I happen to glance at the other side of the highway and back towards Tioga Pass was this spectacular scene. It was a great way to spend the 4th of July, and I bet our fireworks display was every bit as good as the ones you saw!
