Tom and Anita Morgan
Anita and Tom Morgan of The Morgan Studio in Penn Valley, California work independently or collaborate, depending on the type of work to be produced. They design, build, glaze and fire both functional and non-functional artworks.
Anita’s background includes a BA and successful career in Fashion Design, and a life long interest in art. After spending most of her life painting in various mediums, this interest has culminated in ceramic sculpture and hand-built pieces, whose three dimensional aspects have allowed her full expression of her whimsical artistic nature.
Tom, with several degrees, has pursued a wide range of careers while indulging his lifelong interests in Oriental Philosophy and Arts. After painting in acrylics and oriental brush, his work has also culminated in ceramics which allows him to combine the art of design with the scientific formulation of glazes and finishes.
While Gillian Hodge was our mentor in ceramics until her recent death, we have also studied under Rodney Mott and Richard Hotchkiss. We have taken many workshops from Marilyn Levine, Susannah Israel, the late Peter Voulkos, Paul Soldner, Rudy Autio,
Dave Dontigny, Jim Stephenson, John Balistrierri, Warren Mackenzie, Terry Shepherd, and Tom Collins.
The Morgan Studio produces prize-winning low, medium and hi-fired hand-built sculptures and wheel-thrown pottery glazed utilizing Raku, Saggar, low and mid-range oxidation, pit and wood-firing techniques, and hi-fire reduction. Styles range from whimsical to classic, realistic, impressionistic, abstract and oriental.
Although the Morgan’s have now retired from working in ceramics, we still have a limited number of their pieces available for purchase.
